Dog feces not an acceptable material for green bin

The City of Ottawa has recently been informed by Orgaworld Canada that their current Ministry of Environment Certificate of Approval issued by the Ministry of the Environment for their composting facility does not include dog feces as an acceptable material.The certificate does allow for the receipt and handling of other small pet feces, as long as it is included as a part of cat litter and small animal bedding materials. City to collect organic materials from green bins

Residents of the City have started rolling out their green bins to the curb. The City of Ottawa Green Bin program provides residents an opportunity to set out their organic material in their new green bin as of January 4. Once the green bins have been collected, the organic material will be processed and turned into compost. For more information visit ottawa.ca.

The holiday season is the perfect time to start feeding your green bin. “With holiday entertaining, there are lots of things around our home that my family and I can now put in the green bin,” said Councillor Peter Hume, Chair of the City of Ottawa’s Planning and Environment Committee. Collection calendar distribution is now complete

The City of Ottawa has completed the distribution of the 2010 to May 2011 collection calendar to approximately 260,000 households. The calendar provides residents with detailed information on Blue box and Black box recycling schedules, leaf and yard waste collection, and the City’s new Green Bin program. Green Bin pickup to begin on schedule

The City’s organic waste collection will begin, as scheduled, on January 4, 2010.

City officials have been informed by Orgaworld Canada Limited that they are working towards accepting the City’s organic waste at the new Orgaworld facility on January 27, 2010.

City staff have a contingency plan developed to ensure continuity of customer services that will see organic material collected on January 4, 2010 and transported to facilities outside the municipality for processing. For more information, visit ottawa.ca.
